My students need toys and activities, such as colorful blocks, life-size meal sets, and magnetic fishing pole games, to encourage functional communication.

My Students
Every day is a different day in the speech room. My classroom hosts students ranging from ages 3 to 10. We work in small groups to address the students' special needs in the areas of speech and language.
I work at a large Title I Elementary School with more than 750 students.
Of those students, I have a caseload of over 60 who have with special needs in the areas of speech and language. Some have little to no language skills whereas others struggle with social communication. All of my students show the potential to improve, and it is my job to keep them motivated and guide them towards success.
My Project
The materials I have selected will encourage my students to use language in different ways. They can make requests for preferred toys, such as colorful blocks. Games such as "What's Wrong?" will support conversational exchanges by describing things that are out of the ordinary. The classic toy "Mr. Potatohead" is a fun way to demonstrate body part vocabulary as well as help students make requests for different pieces. All toys, games, and materials will help develop functional communication skills in the classroom.
These donations have the potential to change my students' lives for the better.
Speech and language skills are what enable students to make their needs known, participate in their classrooms, and make lasting friendships with their peers. In the right hands, these toys can help students carry over what they learn at school to their everyday lives.
