Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are preschoolers with a variety of disabilities from Autism to Cerebral Palsy to Peter's Anomaly. Many of my students are English language learners and children of color. A majority of the district receives free or reduced lunch. Many of my students face a multitude of hardships, but always attend school with a smile.
My goal is to make communicating fun and easy and to do that, I need to adapt my materials, build rapport, and continue to learn with them.
By doing these things, I hope to help build expressive language, receptive language, and especially social language.
Social communication is the key to forming relationships with others; this is especially important for my children who are on the spectrum. I need to model good social language and guide them to have positive social interactions to help them build friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime. I hope to help my students build these skills that will set them up for success.
My Project
These toys, texts, and games have been picked to help my children grow in the areas of expressive language, receptive language, social language, and articulation. I hope to choose toys and activities that are engaging and applicable for a wide variety of goals.
In order to engage preschoolers with special needs, I need to adapt current and future books with fun, visual, and tactically-stimulating objects.
Thus, I want to expand my collection of adapted books with "There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly." I also want to adapt the books I have with materials that toys that children can also play with and gain social skills and expand their expressive language; I have many "baby" books that the children enjoy reading. I specifically want to get multi-ethnic baby dolls to mirror the diversity in my students and use the baby doll accessories (e.g. bottle, clothes, bathtub) to have the student "act out" stories that we have already gone over and play with one another. The pretend play kitchen set and farm play set serve a similar purpose.
As a speech-language pathologist, I am constantly seeking toys that incorporate the sounds that my children are working on seamlessly so that the children are practicing their sounds without dreading practicing it. Thus, the wide variety of wind-up toys, "What's Inside?" Soft Feely Box (with accompanying toys), and Candy Land board game are great ways to incorporate a variety of age-appropriate sounds in a fun way. Additionally, the magnetic wands and magnetic bingo chips are fun ways to adapt the articulation materials I currently have.
Finally, the double-sided tabletop art easel (magnetic whiteboard and chalkboard) is invaluable for collaborating with the occupational therapist - we can simultaneously work on fine motor and language.
