Help me give my students the gift of play! These items will improve my special education classroom by providing a learning platform for many important skills.
Allow me to introduce you to our room, better known around school as The Fish Class! We are made up of 25 students aged 3-5 years, 1 teacher, and 2 assistant teachers. The Fish Class is a special type of classroom because we are comprised of 10 students who receive Special Education services and 11 typically developing peers.
Each and every "fishy" in our class brings something special to the table (quite literally, sometimes-- cue "coat pocket snacks").
They are comical, witty, bright, and quirky. Like any 3, 4, and 5 year olds, they know how to push my buttons but at the end of the day, I never leave school without knowing how much they love their teachers thanks to their perpetual high fives and relentless hugs.
They truly are a special group has captured my heart and ensured that I will never not know how much I'm appreciated.
My Project
In an integrated classroom, students' strengths and weaknesses vary immensely from one student to another. While this outstanding diversity can make things fun, it can also make it tough to teach to each students' individual learner profile.
Using manipulatives, toys, games, and activities I am able to adapt and modify in order to make learning accessible for all of my students.
We will use these items throughout the day, over and over during centers, free play, and thematic units. Many of the supplies that we need, are items that celebrate the unique diversity of races in my class. We have students of Hispanic, American, Asian, and African descent in my class. Many of my students primarily speak Spanish. Being capable of instilling the virtue of diversity and acceptance is very important to me.
