My Students

My classroom is an ecosystem. Since I consider my classroom to be an ecosystem, my students are an organism and my class is the population. There are many other organisms in the classroom and one of them will hopefully be Nexus tablets that will help foster a sense of community and collaboration.

My students are a diverse group of inquirers that thrive on being able to demonstrate their knowledge through creative projects and captivating presentations.

I try to foster a culture of research that involves various media including books, video, Internet, and other print media. The school is a Magnet school that pulls students from all the schools in our system and brings them together to learn in a non-traditional way. Although we have several computers in our classroom where students can do research, my goal is for every student to have access to a computer without having to compete for times in the computer lab.

My Project

One of the important aspects of computers in the classroom is student engagement. An engaged student is, of course, the best type of student to have. When students are engaged with the tablets they will be driven by projects that require research, collaboration, and the production of a final product. This could come in the form of a slide show, video, webpage, or some other media. Time and distance no longer create barriers when students have the ability to access the world around them in an instant. They can view locations around the world, connect with students in other countries, practice their foreign language acquisition, and a host of other tasks. Being able to capitalize on a student's inquiry or unexpected discussion is much harder when you have to schedule time in the lab. In a 1-to-1 classroom, when a topic arises the student can immediately go online, investigate, question, and extend the conversation with information and tools not available to them in other situations.

Children learn by absorbing and storing the information they encounter.

They take that information, add more information to it, draw conclusions, and solve problems. As we know, computers are essential for almost any job. One-to-one computing ensures that all students have the skills and the confidence to integrate technology into their future as well as their present.
