Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my first year as a classroom teacher since 1996. My new students are 80% Hispanic and reside in Detroit. I want them to squeal with joy when they walk into their classroom. I will be their math and science teacher and want our classroom to look like a science lab. We will share all kinds of adventures inside and outside our classroom. We will also be inviting a variety of Hispanic scientists, engineers, and mathematicians into our room to learn more about their careers.

Due to their English language challenges and residing in an inner-city, their exposure to authentic math and science may be limited.

My task as their teacher will be to find ways for them to have access to fun and exciting real-life​ scenarios.

My Project

The students in my class love to play Square Up during indoor recess. They have decided they would like have class tournaments. I love Square Up because it is an excellent resource for improving their spatial skills. The problem is we need to have 10 games to have all of the students engaged in tournament play at the same time.

This proposal includes 10 Square Up games so the students can create a tournament to find out who is among the most spatial in the classroom!

They are quite sure they are all special but their spatial skills vary. Tournament play will allow them to practice their spatial skills repeatedly in a very engaging manner.

We also have a team participating in a creative problem solving competition. They need a variety of materials to help them with a solution for their challenge. This project includes a remote control car and supplies for their competition.
