Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a special education teacher in an urban public school in Illinois, each day I have the pleasure of helping struggling students discover the magic of learning. Through the use of multi-sensory structured language instruction, my 2nd-5th grade students have made significant progress in reading, writing, and spelling. Now, I want to incorporate similar multi-sensory techniques into my math instruction.

As their teacher, I have my own obstacles to face, as well. Across the country, as school districts are tightening their belts and stretching their budget to meet the needs of the district, special education services are experiencing the brunt of the dwindling budgets. While research has pinpointed multi-sensory instruction as a means for reaching all students, there has been limited monetary support for me to purchase the necessary materials and supplies. In order to ensure that all students are learning, making progress, and experiencing success, multi-sensory instructional techniques need to be incorporated into any math program. Generally speaking, the materials needed to create such an engaging curriculum can be costly; the demand outweighs the supply.

Through the various materials requested, my teaching and instruction will be presented using all learning pathways in the brain (visual/auditory, kinesthetic-tactile) simultaneously in order to enhance memory and learning. The secret to TouchMath is simple. In fact, it can be summed up in one word: TouchPoints. Each numeral from 1 through 9 has TouchPoints corresponding to the digit's value. *Numerals 1 through 5 have single TouchPoints. *Numerals 6 through 9 have double TouchPoints. As students count the TouchPoints, they associate numerals with real values. They learn that a numeral (3, for instance) is not just a squiggle on a page. It represents a quantity such as three apples, three ladybugs, three buttons or three TouchPoints. The 2nd Grade Subtraction Kit adheres to the successful step-by-step process that distinguishes TouchMath from other programs. We begin by presenting equations using TouchPoints on numerals. As students become more proficient and memorization skills become more refined, we remove the TouchPoints. Place value takes center stage in our second-grade subtraction material. We reinforce this concept pictorially and through visual cues.
