Touchable Science

Help me give my students materials to complete hands-on science learning. These cylinders, prisms, lasers, and circuit sets will let them actually "do" the science instead of just "watching" the science.

My Students

My students come to class each day expecting me to provide a safe yet enriched environment. I work at focusing on giving my students opportunities in the classroom that they probably don't have at home. Most of my students come from economically challenged homes. Our school has an estimated poverty level of 60% of our population. I don't want anything to limit the things they are exposed to or the things they can do.

My students are eager to learn.

They love to be engaged. Being engaged keeps their attention. It allows their minds to grow. It allows them to be the major stakeholder in their education. Active learning allows them time to grow. It allows them chances to make mistakes, but yet learn from those mistakes. It allows them to fix those mistakes. It allows them to understand that the real work requires teamwork, it allows for mistakes, and it allows them to come up with their own solutions that may or may not fit the norm.

My Project

Students who have a "hand" in learning how science works will learn much better than students who are just "told" about science. Students need to lead their science learning by experimenting over and over again. They learn from their failures. They see what they did wrong and then think of new ways to "fix" their failures. By doing hands-on projects students get that first-hand knowledge of science. They feel like they are in control.

Science should be engaging.

It should not be a class that students dread going to. The prisms, cylinders, laser pointer, and circuit set will allow students to be engaged in the scientific process. Students will lead their learning. They will use their higher-order thinking skills to solve problems. These materials will help them find solutions.
