Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a passionate National Board Certified special education high school teacher. Our school is a Title I school serving a diverse population. The students I work with are determined and strive to persevere through social, emotional, and academic challenges. My Community-Based Instruction (CBI) class has worked on the yearbook staff, attended school activities, volunteered in the community, and served on the (ASB) Associated Student Body. They excel with movement and hands-on experiences. I am blessed to be their teacher and strive to encourage students beyond their greatest expectations.

As the new semester begins, I would like to introduce my students to Erik Weihenmayer.

His Touch the Top Curriculum Program brings his story to life in the classroom. His message is a powerful example for students as they find their own ways through life, pushing past limits imposed on them. His family played an important role in the battle to break through the barriers of blindness: his mother who prayed for the miracle that would restore my sight and father who encouraged me to strive for that distant mountaintop. Designed with Common Core Standards for grades 8-12, the program includes guides for ELA, Social Studies and Science — all components to enhance key themes and reinforce student’s understanding. After students complete the program, he will video conference into our classroom to meet students. This is an amazing opportunity for students to feel represented in their school and community.
