I am the special education teacher for the entire second-grade in a low-income/high poverty Title I school in Delaware. Our students are faced with many challenges on a daily basis in and out of school. They come to school to work hard in an environment that embraces their learning challenges and helps them succeed.
Throughout the day, I teach our students to become independent thinkers who will do the right thing in challenging situations and persevere through difficulties.
My students support one another, creating an inviting learning community where they feel comfortable taking risks.
As a second grade special education teacher it is my job and passion to use the best and most current researched based teaching practices to help my students learn to read and write. I seek out materials that will help them achieve their learning goals in all academic areas with a focus on learning to read.
My project is for a 24" touchscreen computer monitor. There are many interactive websites, google slides and PowerPoint lessons that are built on the premise that the students will be able to manipulate and or move around things on the screen. I am currently unable to do small group lessons that involve touchscreen materials as I have no way to currently. Many of the best lessons that I wish to use are tied to or built upon the Science of Reading. The Science of Reading lessons I want to incorporate into my small groups are built on systematic and explicit instruction in learning to read. If I am able to utilize a touchscreen monitor large enough to use, I can teach using the best and most up to date materials and teach my students to read.
