My Students
My high school students face toxic stressors from a myriad of socio-economic challenges. Some frequently come to class stressing about exams and anxious about their future. Many share their need for “resetting” strategies to reduce stress and build resilience.
My students want mindful educators that can help in "stepping away from the stress zone and getting myself together." Our rules of classroom engagement embrace a "safe space" where multiple and varied perspectives are represented, mindful listening and speaking are encouraged.
But, our current 10-minute daily mindful breath practice is not enough to connect our "heads, hands and hearts."
A mindful school culture that supports social-emotional well-being can liberate and empower.
My Project
I was successful in my application to the Transformative Educational Leadership professional development program with Omega Institute. The week-long residential retreats bookend the year-long program, offering “a uniquely rich and immersive practice experience that supports growth and development in two ways: silent mindfulness practice and professional skills development.” Attending the Opening Retreat July 27 – 29, 2018 and Closing Retreat July 14 - 19 2019 are required for completion of the PD Program. The funds will contribute in part to my expense for TEL Retreats at the Omega Institute.
I will hone my skills in best practices for the infusion of mindfulness in classroom pedagogy.
My students and I can benefit from mindfulness practices as a tool for self/other awareness, compassion, and empathy to empower us as leaders and learners in our Early College High School.
