Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -Benjamin Franklin This project will allow students to engage in literacy in a hands-on way to meet their tactile/sensory and visual needs.
My students range from grades K-3 and range in disabilities from mild to moderate, low and high incidence disabilities such as learning disabilities, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities and speech language delays.
My students are visual learners and are highly engaged with hands-on and interactive activities that engage their sensory and tactile needs. Our school is located in a high poverty and high crime area, so most students do not have resources at home to support their visual and tactile needs. Unfortunately, the lack of resources at the school also makes it difficult to get resources to support these needs. My goal is to provide students with hands-on materials for reading to make literacy more sensory in order to engage students in learning and help improve their comprehension skills in reading.
My Project
The Fairy Tales STEAM kit combines hands-on materials with literacy activities in order to answer questions and complete challenges in order to build critical language and literacy skills. The Activity Tree for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom will allow students to physically follow along while they listen to the story read aloud. The students can stick the letters to the tree as they listen to the story to get plenty of practice with the alphabet as they bring the story to life. Students will enjoy bringing the monster to life with the Go Away, Big Green Monster! Storytelling Puppet Kit. As students follow along with the story, they add the facial features of the monster. The Storytelling Lapboard will allow for stories to come to life as the Storytelling Puppets stick to the board in order to act out the stories.
Students will improve their literacy skills with these hands-on resources which will satisfy their sensory and tactile needs.
I will be able to support student needs using these resources to help students improve literacy skills. Thank you for considering our project and supporting our classroom.
