Touch and Talk Using Technology

My students need an iPod to access learning apps. There are numerous articles that show children with autism opening up to the world through an iPad or an iPod.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My prompt, "Open with the challenge facing your students." They have autism. All six of them. All 25 in our program. Autism is their challenge. If you've told a child a thousand times and he still does not understand, then it is not the child who is the slow learner. - Walter Barbee.

Processing information is very difficult for my students.

For children with autism, technology can be a life line. Utilizing computers, iPads, mp3 and CD players all make learning easier for our students. Temple Grandin, an adult with autism, explains how she processes information as scanning through Google images on the computer. Our school is a Title I school. That means that the majority of our students are at poverty level and therefore qualifies for free or reduced meals. In fact, 75% of our entire school qualifies for free or reduced lunch. The other 25% barely made it over the cut off line for qualifying. Our school has an autism program designed to meet the needs of the students in a small class setting that is highly structured. We have three teachers with classrooms divided by functioning and communication levels. However, within our school day, we move students around the three classes so their academic needs are being met at their level.

My Project

An iPod Touch. Doesn't say much does it? Technology is a highly preferred task for many children with autism. Technology provides those visual supports. I use my personal iPad to reinforce skills through reading and mathematics applications as well as ones that are geared towards helping fine motor skills. One iPad is not enough for technology hungry students. Having an iPod Touch will allow our students to access various learning apps.

Everyone is a genius.

But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid. - Albert Einstein. Autism affects 1 in 88 children. The numbers continue to rise and teachers are challenged in how to best meet their needs in the class setting. With high stake assessments being expected of more and more children, we need to find any way we can to reach our students. An iPod Touch is one simple step in that direction.
