Help me give my students plush desert tortoises! In our unit on waves, one of our most fun and essential activities is when we use radio telemeters to find desert tortoises which have been fitted with radio collars!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our unit on waves, one of the most fun and engaging activities that we do is to set up a simulation on our large dirt field in which we pretend the field is a desert. We then search for animal models that have been fitted with radio collars using radio telemeters that we borrow from the zoo. This activity is a great way for students to see the real-life application of how waves are used in science, and they can also get a feel for what it is like to participate in field biology.
Being that we are so close to the desert of Anza Borrego, the most ideal animals to use as models are desert tortoises.
Students can learn about the need to help these animals which are so close to our local area. However, right now all we have are paper models. If this project gets funded students will get to find the plush tortoises, which are so much more realistic and fun! You would be surprised how exciting a few stuffed animals can be to a group of 8th graders!
