The success of my students depends on your help! I teach 12th grade English in a small, southern, rural school district. In the last five years, the three textile mills that sustained our community have closed, leaving our school district in a financial crunch.
Despite our current budget situation, the educators in our school district are dedicated to promoting the best quality of education for our students and maintaining high expectations for their success. This year, our school has developed a new project, The Senior Experience, that each graduating senior will complete. It is our belief that by completing this experience, our students will be gaining knowledge that will prepare them for college and for the work place. The Senior Experience is a four part approach lasting throughout the senior's semester of English class. The students will conduct research on a topic of their choice and will author a research paper, they will construct a product based on the findings from their research, they will showcase their work in a presentation, and they will compile a portfolio of their work. Our problem? Our school has a limited amount of technology for student use and few students have access at home to the technology needed.
It would help my students to be able to work on this project at times outside of class and away from school. Many of my students do not have access to technology at home. Students would checkout the laptop from me, use it at home, and return it to me for another student's use. Many students would also like to design a movie of their work to use in their presentations. In order to do this, they must also have digital cameras to use. Having a digital camera would allow the students to document their process through pictures that can be downloaded and made into a movie without the cost of developing film.
