This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an ESL teacher in Bridgeport, CT. My students are English language learners. Nearly all of my students have been in the United States for less than a year. One hundred percent of the student population qualifies for free lunch. Students face the everyday challenges of living in a low-income community. Students in Bridgeport experience the harmful effects of living in poverty such as a cultural disconnect.
Students in low-income neighborhoods are four times as likely to engage in chronic absenteeism.
The EL students that I work with face the pitfalls associated with low income and the challenge of transitioning to a new country. They push through to learn a new language, to become bi-cultural and bi-literate. In addition to the economic, academic and social challenges, students also face the task of coming to school with little or no resources.
My Project
As an ESL teacher, I am tasked with finding creative ways to increase the impact and engagement and motivation for low-income students and students of color. I design lessons from many different sources including websites. I lack a set of materials that outlines a way to support student experiences throughout the educational process. Specifically, I lack materials that support a sequence of instruction.
Students can have anytime anywhere access to multi-leveled reading and writing materials.
Through the National Geographic learning program teachers and students utilize interactive learning materials and use real world content. The programs are exciting, real, and relevant.
I am requesting online access to an interactive educational software and textbooks for my content area. The National Geographic digital learning experience is a digital content platform. This platform will grant students access to reading materials as well as interactive workbooks. The reading materials have embedded in them best practice strategies that support student engagement and language acquisition. Students will have access to multileveled reading materials based on real world content. I am also requesting hard copies of hard copies of the books so that I may have a library of materials for students to access.
