My students are ESL students new to the country. I teach ESL in an urban school district. Most of my students have been in the U.S. for 8 months or less. Some have been out of school for some years due to their circumstances. The students range from grade 9-12. They all meet poverty guidelines. They are excited to be in the U.S. but struggle with the cultural divide and culture shock. Many have left their parents and/or grandparents. They are spirited and eager to learn English. We have limited supplies; I buy most of everything they need to engage in learning, Materials are expensive, particularly materials needed to help students build language through writing and hands-on projects.
