This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an ESL teacher so that means my students are very diverse. Most of my students are immigrants or refugees and this makes for a very special and extraordinary classroom. They are very different yet so similar in so many ways. Our classroom is enriched by the different cultures, experiences and languages they all represent. They are so eager to share their experiences and learn new ones.

As a newcomer in this country they can sometimes feel overwhelmed and intimidated at times.

This is why it is important for me to help them with not only their education, but also their assimilation to our way of life in North America.

My Project

ESL students will have the amazing opportunity to walk into a theater for the first time and see a live performance of the critically acclaimed Tap Dogs. These students have worked hard all year to overcome the language barrier which stands between them and success. Most of them are fleeing their war ridden countries in search of a better future. Their journey has been paved with hardships and pain, and yet they still aspire to get an education, explore their dreams and maybe just maybe, become the first to graduate from high school in their families.

By exposing them to the arts we will help them broaden their background knowledge in theater and the drama genre, enhance their literary knowledge, empathy and tolerance which in turn will enrich their lives and allow them to connect more intimately to their scheduled reading of the play Romeo and Juliet this semester.
