My school is a public charter school that serves 400 phenomenal Black and Latino students, 75% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Our Speech & Debate Team provides students who are historically underrepresented in Speech & Debate with the opportunities to compete both locally and nationally in public speaking and debating.
Even though it was only our third year having a speech team, over 25 active members were extremely successful at local, regional, and national competitions this past year. We have had students advance to elimination rounds all around the country including at Yale, Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, Harvard and Emory. We are bringing a record sixteen students to the State Championship this April and look forward to building our program even further next year.
My Project
Our students have been killing it on the national circuit in Speech & Debate this year: we have had students advance to elimination rounds at every single national tournament we have attended (including Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Emory, UPenn and Columbia). We have been particularly blessed with a hard-working, brilliant cohort of underclassmen, and I can't wait to see where their hard work will take them in the coming years.
These top underclassmen want to take their conceptual understanding of the world around them to a new level by independently studying for the AP Human Geography Exam.
Unfortunately, our school doesn't offer this course, but these kids want to work together before school to prepare for the test next May. To do so, we need some fundamental materials like this AP Human Geography textbook. Since this is a college-level text, it is really expensive, and so for the time being, I'm trying to get just one donated that the kids can take turns reading and taking notes out of.
