Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently teaching at a Title I school in a low socioeconomic neighborhood where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. This school year, I have twenty-five second and third grade English language learners students.
Most of my students come from Central America and Mexico.
For most of my students, English is their third language. My students vary in ability, background and learning styles. It is this diversity that makes my class a special place to be.
My students walk into the classroom with enthusiasm to learn and, regardless of the obstacles they may face at home, they come to school eager to learn something new every day. They know that through hard work and perseverance, they can rise to overcome any challenge.
My Project
Recorders are an exciting way to learn music! My students want to learn to play an instrument and I need to provide positive experiences during these unprecedented times. The recorders in this project are soprano recorders that are easier and more fun to play. By playing recorders, students will learn how to breathe into an instrument, finger placement, and movement to produce desired notes/pitches and read notes from music sheets.
The experience of learning an instrument will give my students confidence in their musical ability and give them an outlet during distance learning.
With these recorders, I will be able to teach the entire class to play songs in unison and harmony. Learning how to play the recorder will definitely benefit my students' lives by giving them a chance for a hands-on musical experience. It will give them a lifelong appreciation for music and perhaps a gateway to wanting to learn to play a woodwind, brasswind or any instrument that their hearts desire.
