My Students
My first graders attend a large Title I school with roughly 700 Kindergarten through 5th-grade students. Our classroom is made up of 22 diverse students. Approximately 70% of our students are living in poverty and there are 18 different languages spoken at home. We take great pride in the cultural diversity we represent and are consistently inspired by the resiliency of our students. While many of our students do not have the advantages of having attended preschool, they enter the doors every morning eager for new discoveries and new challenges. I want to continue to encourage these learners every step of the way with as many experiences and opportunities as possible. Despite the challenges this may cause, my students are hard working and determined learners.
My Project
There is so much truth in the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words." A picture has the incredible ability to take a story to the next level. It also has the power to take a developing reader to an understanding in literacy that every teacher strives for.
The TOON book set that I am requesting provides the graphic support each of my young readers need.
These graphic novels will allow my readers to gain understanding from the images while interpreting their meaning. This type of narrative understanding is crucial for their literacy development.
The power of the picture will also support their narrative writing skills. By studying and becoming proficient comic readers, my students will be able to transfer the skills to their Writers' Workshop.
