This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in New York City. Our school is located in an area of the South Bronx with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students are eligible for free lunch. They are a hard working group of first graders who are persistent, and determined to do well in school. They are a group of hard workers who need essential resources to help them do their best work.
My Project
My students need interesting and exciting books to put them on the path to becoming lifelong readers, writers and thinkers.
"If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book."~ J.K.Rowling.
It has been said that "Once reading stretches the mind, it will never return to its former size." Perhaps, your heard the phrase, "Something is not clicking" when someone describes a first grader having difficulty mastering early reading and writing skills. My students need increased opportunities and resources to develop the early literacy skills that will help them become proficient readers and writers. For this reason, I am requesting a set of 14 award-winning TOON books, that are not only engaging but have topics and themes they can relate to. My students will be able to read these books during their independent reading time and build their reading stamina, sight word vocabulary and comprehension, too!
The TOON books that I am requesting for this project are needed and essential. These books are funny, whimsical, easy-to-read, and no doubt, will help my students become better readers, writers and thinkers. These interesting and visually engaging books will help my struggling readers improve their reading and writing skills and develop a love of reading.
