Help me give my students fresh new graphic novel books! These special books by TOON Graphics will provide a wealth of knowledge from genre studies to storytelling. These books will have the kids reading more and often!
3rd grade is such a challenging year as the kids are still very young (8-9 years old) but are asked to accomplish a lot at a very high level. This grade level is a huge transition year from lower elementary to upper elementary. I have 26 students; 12 girls and 14 boys. All of them are super sweet and eager to learn. More than 2/3 of the class are classified as English Language Learners (ELLs). Half the parents speak little to no English. Most are 1st generation immigrant families wanting better opportunities for their children. The school is also Title I, with 85% of our students qualifying for free/reduced-price meals.
My class loves to laugh a lot!
The students have a fun time playing during P.E. with games such as circle dodgeball, sharks and minnows, kickball, and banana tag. We also make time for mindfulness as we meditate through a program called Inner Explorer. We build community through morning circles as we share about each other's day and problems. We also share common experiences during shared reading time as we make connections with our reading. The kids here really enjoy school!
In today's age of entertainment and technology, it is difficult to capture students' attention. On top of that, my low readers are less likely to read and fill in their daily reading log if something is not flashing and moving.
That's where graphic novels can fill in the gap!
I believe that having these graphic novels in our library will build both excitement and engagement for the whole class! The visual aids found in the these books should help kids follow the story for both pleasure and for information. In the end, the ultimate goal I have for my students would be that they become lifelong readers!
