In my Life Skills Support classroom, you will find a very diverse group of students. My students are in grades nine through twelve, but they can stay in school up to age twenty-one.
The students range in ability levels from preschool (two years old) to fifth grade, with many varying levels in between.
In high school, we work on learning basic life skills as well as maintaining academic levels in order to best prepare students for life after high school.
Each student is unique and faces their own set of challenges daily. Many need constant stimulation through either physical items to play with or moving their body. We are in an inner-city school district that has been struggling financially year after year. I want my students to have the same resources available as students in surrounding districts.
The majority of my students come from low-income families that have few resources. On top of that, I also have several students who are also refugees. Those students never attended school before entering the US. I would love to provide my students with the resources needed to become as independent as possible upon graduating high school!
My Project
The books will provide the students more opportunity to read in the classroom independently, as a small group, and as a whole group. I can build more lessons around the new books to help with reading fluency, comprehension, and writing skills. With the books provided the students will experience reading in a way that they might not be able to at home. I want to keep the students interested in reading so that they can continue to learn and grow in every aspect of life. Reading is the cornerstone to all learning, and I hope to help each one of my students to become a better reader so that they can be successful upon graduation.
This project will help with building a classroom library in my Life Skills Support classroom.
The TOON Graphics series offer high interest reading supported by pictures to help increase students self confidence when reading. By adding to our classroom library I hope to continue my students' love of reading as well as building upon their interests and desire to learn new things.
