My students need more graphic novels! All my students, even the struggling students, can't get enough graphic novels. Students are so engaged and motivated to read graphic novels and I can't keep them in my library!
My classroom is made up 4th graders who absolutely love to read. I am always looking for more material to encourage their love of reading, while deepening their critical thinking skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. The school district that I teach in has a low income rate of over 70%, as well as a mobility rate of more than 30%. My students often don't have reading materials available to them at home, and I want to help provide them with every resource available.
My Project
My reluctant readers absolutely love graphic novels. I can't get these books in their hands quick enough. These books are brightly colored and highly engaging to students, yet they are becoming even more fluent readers, all while increasing their comprehension.
My hope is that the confidence they find by reading graphic novels allows them to translate into harder chapter books, all while boosting their Lexile scores.
The Toon series offers graphic novels in selections that I haven't seen anywhere else. I love the variety of the choices and Greek Mythology is huge in 4th grade, but it's hard for the struggling readers to comprehend. These graphic novels will definitely help bridge that gap.
I feel as if all these books will greatly benefit my classroom. My students are finally excited to read, and I want to get them books they will truly enjoy and beg me to read.
