My Students
"Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say." Imagine journeying through life without the means to communicate with the world around you. This is, unfortunately, the case for many of the students I am blessed to work with on a daily basis. I serve as a speech-language pathologist at a developmental preschool in a low-socioeconomic area located near Indianapolis, IN.
Every student I assist presents with a unique set of strengths and I feel it is my job to build off his or her strengths.
The students I am surrounded by daily have a variety of disabilities ranging from Down syndrome to severe cognitive disabilities, to all types of autism. While the students exhibit their own set of challenges, the joy they bring to me on a daily basis far outweighs any negatives. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to make even the slightest impact on the lives of each one of my students.
My Project
Everyone likes to have fun right? And everyone wants to be successful right? Well when you pair these two things together, you have the ultimate recipe for a perfect speech-language therapy session! This may seem easy from an outsider's eye, but you take into account the age of preschoolers and the challenges that come in working with individuals who have special needs, this becomes increasingly more challenging. To promote both enjoyment and progress for those students who have speech, language, and communication needs, therapy needs to be engaging, novel and motivating. This requires creativity on my part as their speech-language pathologist to find the most effective toys/games and tools to ensure that each student reaches their true potential.
Like all things in life, successful tools, toys, and games come with a cost, which is where I need your help.
I assure you that your donation will be well spent and make a difference in the lives of a number of students that I have the honor of servicing in a public school system. These materials will reach a wide number of students varying in race, socioeconomic status, and disability. I know that while your donations may be near to your heart or come from afar, we can all work as a team to give these students opportunities to improve, grow, and be proud of what they have achieved.
