Students in our small school setting are able to do more individual projects and tailor learning to their interests. However, it requires the purchase of additional supplies and lab equipment for students to complete a variety of different projects in science. As we incorporate STEM into the curriculum, and it requires even more.
It is very important however because giving students the opportunity to investigate different options and giving them an experience that they would otherwise never be exposed to.
We have a very small school with about 50 students in the grades 9-12. There are not many opportunities for students in this area. It is fairly isolated from any bigger cities. Students and families are generally involved in outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. The socioeconomic background for families in this area is very low with more than 65% of students qualifying for free and reduced school lunches. Students here know they have to work hard for everything they get.
My Project
The students in all my science classes participate in many project-based learning experiences. They develop projects designed to meet state science standards and to answer questions they are particularly interested in. There are a wide variety of projects done by the students. Because of the individuality of the projects, the students require a wide variety of lab equipment. This Vernier lab equipment will help provide students with more options for their projects. It will also make the equipment more accessible by providing storage and charging stations for the Lab Quest II units required to process and display data collected with the Vernier lab probes.
