Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard-working, resilient, and full of zest. They come to school wanting to learn despite challenges they face at home or in the community. They enjoy reading and math but they also enjoy learning about their brain and social emotional skills.
In the neighborhood I teach in, many of my students have been exposed to chronic stress or trauma in their young lives.
They are the most resilient children I have ever taught. School is their safe place.
My Project
This year, I was able to attend the Trauma Informed Schools Conference. I learned how chronic stress affects a child’s brain from before birth. I learned that children need to learn ways to regulate their brains so they can feel calm and safe. As teachers, we have lots of pressure to do well on state testing. However, at my school, we know that we first have to take care of the child's brain and emotions for learning to occur. We understand that what might be considered a misbehavior is really a student communicating to us that they are dysregulated.
With this project, I am asking for different tools that will encourage safe movement and an outlet for students when they are dysregulated.
Repetitive motor movement can be key in helping some students regulate. I am asking for tools that require repetitive movement as well as other tools to help students regulate safely. I am asking for are bike pedals, balance balls, a rocker, fidgets, and more. Each tool works in a different way and supports a different part of the brain. I will teach the tool and then allow students to use the tool to help him/her regulate so they can regain focus and open pathways for more learning.
