Help me give my students access to master Math by using kinesthetic and visual tools that will allow for more engaged interaction with their academics, and help them in meeting grade-level objectives despite their learning differences.
My students attend a Title I school and are diagnosed with a myriad of Educational disabilities. I have a mix of African-American, Hispanic, multi-racial and Caucasian students. they range in age from 6-10 years. Approximately 69% of my students qualify for free lunch and require additional snacks to meet their increased appetite. Each student differs from the others, one having super memory strength, another fluent in decoding words, another having the most joyous laugh and motivation to learn.
Each of my students is unique in both their personal strengths and needs in order to master grade-level objectives, and each of my students has individual goals to meet that will aid them in mastering life-skills, academics, and social skills.
Due to their diagnoses, my students learn more effectively through one-on-one and small group activities and require specific environmental accommodations that are not readily available in our school system.
My classroom budget is a reimbursement of $50/ semester, and this covers the paper towels, kleenex, dry erase markers, notebooks, and pencils required. All other materials are funded by me and by generous donations made by others who wish to see my incredible students succeed despite their diagnoses.
My Project
These ETA hand2mind materials will allow my students with diagnoses such as autism, dyslexia, ED, ADD, ADHD, and OHI at first-, second- and third-grade levels to engage in mathematics. They will be able to use the fluency kits to provide foundational skills that will allow them access to higher level math classes as they learn to accommodate their disabilities.
They will be able to interact with manipulatives and concrete visuals that represent the abstract concepts in their grade-level mathematics curriculum.
Students that need more visual and kinesthetic stimulation will use these tools to better understand the operations needed to master Louisiana's State Grade-Level Expectations required by the Eureka curriculum that my school district requires each student to participate in, in order to keep each student included and on grade-level instruction.
