This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Each day, as I assign various projects and tasks, the students ask me for writing utensils and paper, the basic tools needed to do schoolwork. At first I’m frustrated, but then I recall their individual circumstances and I am disheartened.
The entire student population of my school is on a free or reduced-price lunch.
Most do not have money for simple things like basic school supplies, book bags and clothes (school uniform, regular laundry washing, etc.).
Despite these obstacles, most of my students are, admirably, college-bound. It is my goal to get 100% of my students to college, but without preparation (which they achieve through completion of my projects and assignments) they will be ill-equipped for the expectations and stipulations of college coursework.
My Project
The students will use these materials (pens, pencils, notebook paper) to write, plain and simple. I have my students write a bit every day (a paragraph, a poem, a literary summary) and they need the basic supplies to do this. Generally, I suffer the cost of these materials myself, but as the teachers in my district have not received raises in nearly a decade, I am finding it difficult to balance the cost of assisting my students with supporting myself.
This project will make an exponential difference in the lives of these inner city youths.
They have felt abandonment on nearly every level throughout their lives; for someone (anyone, especially a stranger) to show them support and empathy is priceless in terms of what it adds to their self-esteem and self-worth. Academically speaking, this project will also help a group of determined and driven students properly prepare for the college education they so rightfully deserve.
