Tools Needed to Guide Neurodiverse Students Through Their Universe

My Project
I am a first year school counselor excited to be able to work at two high support needs schools in my school district. As I make the transition from the classroom to this new role, I have begun to make connections with the students and recognize the need they have for coping skills for self-regulation for behavior modification.
Many of these emerging adult-aged students are neurodiverse and are working hard to understand how to effectively navigate life while living in their own unique universe of thought processes.
The tools I have selected for this project are all evidence-based tools for emotional regulation through the use of sensory modalities: light, sound, temperature, touch, pressure, and balance. Having these tools available for the students to use through out their day for regulation breaks will allow them to not only gain skills in self-regulation of strong emotions such as anxiety and anger, but also gain ability to focus and connect in their classrooms for more effective learning.
The rotating shelves and hanging chairs will be used to create a "Finding my Calm," emotional regulation lending library area where students will have access to social and emotional learning books, fidgets, art and school supplies, journaling prompts, mindfulness message cards and will allow the students freedom to explore options and try different strategies to foster eventual independence in behavior and emotional regulation.
Ultimately these new tools will help me achieve the main goal of a school counselor, to assist students by removing barriers within the school environment leading to increased academic performance.
