Ms. Bajwa from Bakersfield CA is requesting Instructional Technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students a tool they can use to record their academic discussions!
My students love to read books! For example, at the beginning of the year, my students were having a difficult time reading books however when I asked students to choose a book they would want to read from Amazon, they became excited. I ordered the books for my students and they started to love to read. My students were excited about sharing what they read in their books when I had one-on-one conferences with them.
They are incredibly intelligent and thoughtful.
For example, they love to have discussions with their shoulder partners and the class as a whole. Once we played Jeopardy while reviewing the book, Night by Elie Wiesel, and they wrote their answers on whiteboards. The entire class was engaged and had fun with the whiteboards. My students get excited about learning and teaching one another. For example, my students participated in a Jigsaw Activity while reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Students were excited when they were placed in their home groups and became the experts of a particular chapter in the book. They love working collaboratively!
As many of you might have experienced, the pandemic has shifted everything we do today. Students have been out of a physical classroom for over a year, and it has been difficult for most students to socialize. This year, I would like to focus on listening and speaking skills to help students with communicating with other scholars. The podcast microphones will be used to record academic discussions about vital and various topics/subjects of interest. These microphones will give my students the necessary technological tool that they can use to showcase the discourse between their peers.
Additionally, the microphones will also be used later in the year for creating podcasts in the ELA classroom.
Podcasts are a form of digital literacy that allows teachers to present the content in a different modality. This also helps students who are English Language Learners to listen to an exemplary example of what it sounds like to speak the language they are learning. Students will also learn how to create their own podcast episodes with their peers. This engaging curriculum will teach students 21st century digital literacy skills that will help them succeed in having academic conversations with other scholars, and it could potentially lead to creating podcasts outside of the classroom.
