My students are hands-on learners more than book learners. I try to do as many activities in which they use their hands and scientific equipment. I feel it helps solidify the concept because they are more apt to remember what they use with Thier hands.
The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
They live in a small Arkansas town that resides in a Title 1 district. Many of them do not get help at home with school work, so what I can teach and show them in the classroom helps excite and motivate them. They need to coming into my classroom excited and chomping at the bit to get to see what is being taught each day. I have already see in the post lab write-ups that they know they learn better with peers, in groups, and getting their hands and eyes involved in the procedures. I know they would greatly appreciate receiving weather instruments that would help solidify what is being taught in the classroom. Then the real world use of science will make more sense.
My Project
My students will be using the anemometer to gather data on daily wind speeds, the dial barometer to gather air pressure data, thermometers for daily temperatures, and other instruments contained in the weather kit to better understand weather and the tools used to predict/forecast the weather. It is very difficult for 7th graders to grasp concepts such as this without being able to read, observe, and plot their readings/observations over time. I know it will greatly benefit them and allow them to have a deeper and clearer understanding of the concepts of weather and meteorology. Our state standards require students to be able to take and record data over a specific length of time. The tools for our weather unit are going to make it possible for the students to gather and analyze data about the weather over a period of 20-30 days.
Donations of this nature will not only help give students the tools needed to understand difficult concepts better.
It will also teach them that people care about the future generation and want to help give them the best tools for the best education possible. I am sure they will be very appreciative of the generosity of the donors.
