My Project

This year, I’m in a new school and teaching middle school English language learners! I haven't met my students yet, but I know they deserve materials that match their age, skills, and middle school personalities. One of the first changes is swapping out the little kid scissors for ones that actually fit middle schoolers' hands. But the needs go far beyond scissors. My students will read books in English that challenge them to think, imagine, and make connections.

I want to give them creative ways to respond to these books so they can express themselves with tools that go beyond pencil and paper.

With a button maker, my students can design and wear buttons with quotes, words, and images inspired by the books they’re reading, such as "Summer of the Mariposas" and "A Long Walk to Water." Butterfly cutouts will let students create a visual project that ties into the book’s themes. Cork boards and burlap fabric will be used to make interactive book displays. The sticky easel pads will help us brainstorm as a class, track vocabulary, and display student thinking on the walls so they can see their progress over time. Notebooks will give every student a personal place to write, draw, and plan. Markers, paint pens, and construction paper will let students create bold, colorful projects that reflect their own voices.

I believe in giving my students tools that let them do something with the language they’re learning. Reading and writing become more meaningful when they can take ownership of their work. These materials will help turn my class into a place where language learning feels active, creative, and connected to the world outside school.
