This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 6th-grade students come from a small, high-poverty city in the Coachella Valley. My class is the only 6th grade Dual Language class in our elementary school and has been a part of the bilingual program since Kindergarten. In fact, I was their kindergarten teacher as well and I am excited to help them finish their elementary dual language experience.
Not only do my students come from high-poverty households but they are also the only 6th-grade class to complete our school's dual language program.
Our school is over 100 years old and is the center of the community with over 90% of our students being English Language Learners (with Spanish being their first language) as well as migrant students of parents that work in the agriculture of the Coachella Valley. Because of our low-income population, new school supplies, such as scissors, highlighters, earbuds and expo markers are usually not a priority and are not generally provided.
Students will use their supplies daily during whole group and small group instruction in math and language arts.
