Tools for Success for Emotionally Impaired Elementary Students
Help me give my students SEL books and games and literacy tools at our Treatment Center for the Emotionally Impaired so they can gain the skills needed to return to the general education setting.
I teach at a public school treatment center for the emotionally impaired. My classroom is for grades 2/3. In order to become enrolled in our program, a child typically will have had to exhibit extreme behaviors for a prolonged period, to the extent that the general education setting is no longer deemed appropriate. This can be for a variety of reasons, but aggression and inappropriate behavior are usually the driving factors.
My students often struggle with appropriate language, safety, impulse control, and participation.
But that’s only part of their story. They are complex, creative, fun, and kind children. In the correct setting, with the appropriate supports, they can gain the skills necessary to learn alongside their neurotypical peers.
As a teacher of the Emotionally Impaired, I want to give them every tool and advantage possible to help them get back to their home schools. And, in the meantime, I want to have the supplies that a teacher at a general education school would typically have, just more geared toward social/emotional learning.
The items I have selected will help me support my kiddos on their journey towards personal and academic growth which is necessary to return to their home schools. They are public school students and wonderful individuals, just like their same aged peers.
Your support will help me to obtain more tools for my toolbox as a teacher. I don’t want to short change them in any way, but the costs of buying these items out-of-pocket can be prohibitive. I appreciate anything and everything the community can contribute to this important cause.
