My students are extremely motivated and focused on getting to graduation. My students are from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds; however, they share the connection of having some form of disability.
I exclusively work with students who have a mild/moderate disability.
They are mainly "invisible" ones. These disabilities include (but are not limited to) ADHD, Specific Learning Disability, Depression, Anxiety, and high functioning Autism.
My students are driven, and they want the same exact things as their non-disabled classmates; however, they face higher rates of drop out and homelessness based on their disabilities, personal perspectives, and limited opportunities. Much of their lack of success is because of their low executive functioning skills.
My Project
The books will allow me to create more robust lessons for students when we are talking about how to succeed in school, career or in our personal relationships outside of high school.
These tools will allow me to create new lessons, targets, and goals for students in my classroom. The questions in the jars will assist me in facilitating conversations around students and their experiences, and prompt them to maybe discuss things that they aren't comfortable with.
The different groups of questions help focus in on a style of conversation students will be having as well as provide enough choice for the students.
The other tools allow me to provide better services and accommodations to students. A tablet charging box will provide a secure place for students to keep laptops, allowing them to learn responsibility and respect for materials that don't belong to them.
In my room, we have Put-Up Pockets where students are encouraged to provide compliments to each other based on good deeds or observations. These cards will allow me to share some compliments with students more easily.
