Tools for Project-Based Learning in Exploring Engineering
Help me give my students tools including oscillating spindle sanders, foam cutters, drill bits, hex driver bits, screw/nut/bolt gauges, and a shop vacumn.
Students in my Exploring Engineering class are interested in a variety of engineering-related fields including computer programming, electrical engineering and electrical circuits, 3D modeling and design, robotics, Arduino coding, and structural engineering. Girls in the class have been recruiting other girls for the class and our school robotics team. Many students work after school in our lab organizing equipment and helping to keep our labs running smoothly.
Students enjoy learning new concepts and then doing hands-on activities based on these concepts.
Students love building and programming robots, designing and building various Arduino projects, and want more hands-on activities where they can build and test things. They also love to compete.
My Project
The CO2 race car project is just one of the hands-on, project-based learning activities we are adding to the Exploring Engineering class this year. Students will be using the foam cutters to create foam prototypes for their CO2 race car designs to get approved before building C02 race cars using balsa wood. They will be using the oscillating spindle sanders to shape their balsa wood car bodies in order to make them more aerodynamic. They will use drill presses to drill holes to attach wheels and axles and then test cars to see if roll straight.
Students will get to race their CO2 cars to see whose is the fastest.
The challenge is to make their car as aerodynamic as possible, drive as straight as possible, and minimize friction between the wheel and the ground and the wheel and the axle. Students will be using the other tools and supplies (hex nut drivers, allen key drivers, various gauges) when working on robotics projects and other hand-on learning activities.
