My Project

As a special education ELA teacher in a small rural school, I have the chance to work with students coming from a vast range of backgrounds. Currently, my school has four reservations in which a large percentage of my schools students live. Many of these students do not have the chance to see themselves represented in the stories or books that we read.

With “rez dogs”, the story of a young girl who moves in with her grandparents during COVID, I hope to incite enthusiasm for reading within my reluctant readers by providing material that they can relate to.

By giving them a chance to read a book that has to do with something they’ve lived through, I am hoping they will be more likely to invest in their learning.
