Tools for Learning: in and Out of the Classroom

My Project

COVID-19 impacted learning for students socially and academically through many ways. Socially, students who were used to learning from home, have a more difficult time focusing and staying attentive during class while sitting at their desks. To address this, I try to provide flexible seating options and opportunities for my students to find a work place that is better for them. With the two floor seats, students are able to comfortably sit in small group areas with each other to work on collaborative projects.

Students learn best when they feel comfortable and are able to be engaged with their learning.

Bouncy bands under desks are an easy and simple solution to allow students (when they do need to be sitting at their desks) an ability to channel any excess energy to fidgets to the band under their desk. I have four bouncy bands currently and would like to offer it to all of my students.

However, learning does not just happen within the classroom. I believe that since the return to school since COVID-19, teachers have the opportunity to provide more meaningful and relevant learning. If we expect students to be life-long learners, we need to help them recognize how to find inquiry and learn through the life (people and places) around us. Large clipboards with gridded paper will provide my students to tools to collaborate and learn through outdoor learning opportunities for science (species diversity surveying, tracking shadows to prove pattern movements of Earth, creating constellation star maps) and math (making scales models of building using measurement conversions).
