Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach children ages 5-13 with a range of abilities who have Autism, Intellectual Disability, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Hearing/Visual Impairments, or are medically fragile. Their speech and language levels are varied. Some of my students communicate verbally but many others are either non-verbal or minimally verbal and thus require augmentative/alternative communication systems (sign, picture symbols, iPad communication applications). They all require multi-sensory learning techniques and unique therapeutic practices to maximize their learning potential.
My students have high-level needs when it comes to their social, language, feeding, and speech skill development.
They are in small self-contained classrooms (12 students or less) in a special needs school located in an urban setting. Our school community serves many children who come from low-income families. Yearly funds to support our students are often limited.
My students mean the world to me and everyone they encounter. I feel lucky to be their speech therapist! They all have their own set of strengths and challenges. Yet they amaze everyone daily with their happiness, intelligence, and resilience!
My Project
My students need mirrors, oral motor tools, and feeding supplies. Mirrors will provide the students with visual feedback to help them with food pacing and with proper placement when using various speech/feeding therapy tools. Some students also need oral motor tools to help them coordinate their tongue, jaw, and lip movements for feeding and speech. The feeding tools are needed to encourage safe and enjoyable mealtime experiences, which fosters the ultimate goal: self-feeding.
My students' needs are complex, which requires we work on feeding and oral motor skill development.
Our goal is to support our students to become independent eaters. We need the requested tools to support them in the mastery of this activity of daily living.
