This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During these past few months of distance learning, the disparities between the haves and have not, have become an unavoidable variable in student's access to quality education. Prior to distance learning, I was able to control the materials required for class. I was able to supplement most things parents could not provide with my own funds, and with the help of donorschoose; however, in this time of need I have found that the need far outweigh the resource available.

Just because a student has a cell phone, does not mean they own a computer.

How can we expect students to type a paper, research information, synthesize resources if they can't have more than one screen on at a time? When I assigned an essay, most of my students turned in digital copies. I knew some of them didn't have computers at home, and I opened my classroom during lunch time, before and after school, but I did not know the sheer number of students that had this need until, COVID-19.

In my campus, with 600 students, we had to distribute over 400 devices (Chromebooks and iPad with keyboards).

My Project

Although I would like more devices than the ones I am requesting, I would rather get two quality items, rather than ask for greater number of frugal items that may not last. I have two students who, when they need to study, must leave their home and find a spot near the front of their apartment to find some shade and solitude, as their small homes are already filled with family members.

When these students graduate in the next five weeks, they must return their Chromebooks they were utilizing for their school work.

These students have already received news that their classes will be all online, and they will need their own devices to continue their education. These students had hoped they could supplement their lack of technology by taking advantage of the computer labs, which are no longer available.
