My Students

My students are third graders, but they are not ordinary third graders. That is because they are studying Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language and learning the core subjects like math, science and social studies in that foreign language. For half a day, they spend time with me in the Chinese dual language immersion class, and after that, move on to another class to learn English. A second group of students then come to my class to learn the same.

My third graders are diligent students, and are eager to learn new things, even when they have to learn them in a foreign language that they have limited experience in.

They learn the skills to decode so that they can understand concepts found in the core subjects. These skills that they acquired prepare them to be better learners.

My Project

Chinese is one of the hardest languages to learn, whether it's speaking or writing. The more they write, the more they will be proficient in the language. I want to provide incentives for my 3rd grade students to love writing.

Some ways I want to encourage my students to write in Chinese include one, giving them the appropriate writing tools, and two, providing them with supplies that keep their writing tools in great condition.

My students have pencils, but everyday, they need to sharpen them so they can write clearly. With sharpeners that have dispensers, they will be able to sharpen their pencils whenever there is a need without having to wait till class instruction is over. They will always have sharpened pencils to write their best writing.

An excellent writing tool is the Chinese writing pad. This pad provides a fun way for students to practice writing characters. They either use a brush or dip their index finger in water to write on the pad. Once the pad dries, it can be reused.
