Tools for a Successful Math Remote Learning Environment

My Students

Our school is a large, Title I school in San Francisco serving over 2000 students across 9th through 12th grade.

As an alumnus and current teacher, I teach a diverse population of students where more than half of the students receive free or reduced lunch and will be first-generation students to go to college.

I will be teaching five sections of Algebra 1, and these classes comprise of mostly freshman students. This DonorsChoose project is important for providing access and equity to my students taking this course, especially during this upcoming school year where we are starting with remote learning.

My Project

As a result of the pandemic, my students and I are starting this school year remotely with distance learning. Teaching math to students remotely is extremely difficult, especially without the right tools to do so.

I am requesting a document camera as well as a whiteboard so that I can replicate the high-quality instruction in the classroom.

The document camera is useful for synchronous teaching, where I can model math problems for students to follow along. This document camera also has the feature to scan material, so I can post it online for students who missed the lesson. As for the whiteboard, this will be used for asynchronous learning where I will record videos of myself teaching in front of the whiteboard so students can see my face for a sense of connectivity as I work out the math problems.
