This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. My special education students learn best through hands-on activities and in small groups, which they love! The majority of students are from single-parent households and receive free breakfast and lunch. Regardless of these challenges, they still come to school eager and ready to learn! Although I may not be able to control their home life, I can definitely control their experience during the day!
My students continue to inspire me to do more to help them reach their potential!
My Project
During our math block, students engage in the Five Practices of Math. In order to be most successful in doing this, the teachers have worked so hard to design and implement our own curriculum, while supplementing from other resources. For special education students, using visuals helps engage them in learning and understand the content.
Most of my students are at home with very limited resources and they actually excited to return to school!
When we are able to go back into the classroom, I want to make learning fun for the students. It is so important to me that when students return to the classroom they feel safe and excited to be there.
I love to teach my students in small groups using manipulative and hands-on materials. Fractions are a tough concept for many of my students but especially my special education students. The fraction stacks, circles, and tiles will give them multiple visuals to learn the concept. Using large magnetic math tools is always so engaging for students. Lastly, the large totes and pouches will give students a place to store and organize their own math tools to use in school and at home. These new materials will be so beneficial to my students!
