My Students
At our school, every child has a place and a voice. We hold high expectations for every member of the learning community, create a warm, safe environment based on collaboration, and build relationships between students, staff, families and the greater community.
Our students represent the best of what our city's values - inclusion, diverse cultural representation, and a community that holds the promise of future leaders.
At our school, every student is seen for their gifts, skills, and contributions while honoring their needs as life-long learners.
My Project
Last spring proved challenging to students and families in many ways when learning overnight moved from the school building to home due to the pandemic. Children and their parents turned to teaching staff for support to manage the extreme stress and boredom that comes with being cooped up at home, spending significantly more time learning on screens, and missing out on the in-person connections with classmates and teachers. As a school social worker, I sought to help by sending weekly letters to students, including in them instructions on self-care as well as activities to help address the fears and anxieties our students had with additional things to do and share with their families and classmates on Google meetings. I heard from many students and parents that these weekly letters and materials were helpful and provided a consistent positive connection through uncertain times.
This fall, as we will continue with distance learning I will offer regular support to students through weekly care letters.
This project will provide self-regulatory tools as well as activities to share with them. Learning to manage the stress and anxiety that goes along with worries about health and community spread of the virus, in addition to the social isolation as children stay indoors for safety, has had a significant impact on the overall mental health and well-being of many. These items and activities are designed to support positive coping skills, as well as offer ways to continue to feed creativity and play which support students' resiliency. Thank you in advance for your support of our students!
