Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been a public school teacher for 12 years and I feel lucky to still wake up every morning excited about my job! I feel inspired by the students and teachers I work with everyday. They challenge me and make me want to work harder, to be a better educator for them. I work as a literacy coach, which means I get to visit all the classrooms across my school. The majority of students I work with are ELL's (English Language Learners) and come from a low socioeconomic background, some are even homeless. I am also tasked with developing teachers brand new to the profession, some who have had no formal teacher training.
Many of the students I work with are reading below grade level and struggle to keep up with the rigorous demands of school.
Each student at my school is special and unique. They are all eager to learn and want to be successful in school. Part of the work I do is to try and harness their excitement and energy and turn it into something positive. It's my job to help support them and their teachers to make literacy learning accessible to all students.
My Project
This project will not be used directly by the students at my school but their teacher will be better equipped to deal with the challenges writers sometimes face as they move through the writing process across a variety of genres. Through attending the Teachers College Reading and Writing Projects Writing Toolkit Institute I will learn many ways to help students remain on a steady trajectory of growth using a variety of tools in their writing. I will also learn ways to use formative assessment and writing standards to inform instruction and toolkit creation.
This project will have a HUGE impact on the support I give to teachers and students across grade levels.
Many of the students at our school are struggling writers. It is no mystery that the best way to target individual student needs is through one-on-one conferences or through small group instruction. This conference focuses on the creation and use of toolkits to support writing conferring and small group instruction. I will be able to help teachers create tools that they can adapt in order to teach both flexibly and responsively during writers workshop.
