On the scenic coast of South Carolina, we’re on the front lines of a dramatic environmental shift—sea level rise is reshaping my students’ local environment. But they’re not just letting it unfold, they’re diving into the action by exploring coastal freshwater streams to document how these environments are changing.
In this engaging project, students will roll up their sleeves, get their hands wet, and embark on a real-world research adventure.
They'll be collecting and identifying the small invertebrate animals that call these streams home. Their mission? To capture information on how sea level rise and the movement of saltwater further inland is transforming freshwater environments. In documenting the invertebrates thriving in these streams today, my students will create a baseline that will be pivotal for tracking future changes and contributing to our understanding of how sea level rise is altering these delicate environments along the coast.
By supporting this project, you’ll not only enhance a valuable research experience for my students, but you’ll also play a crucial role in helping students build first-hand knowledge of how their local environments are being altered by one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: sea level rise.
