This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are incredibly curious and determined learners. They love to ask questions, explore answers and become experts. Unfortunately, they face many obstacles that make it hard for them to keep focus on their learning and reach their potential. Poverty, language barriers and homelessness are all issues that my students deal with even though they are just in 4th grade.
In our classroom, we strive to be a safe and inclusive community that encourages each others learning and individuality.
It is within our community that they find a safe space where they can get breakfast, lunch and an enthusiastic staff that encourages them to challenge themselves and persevere.
My Project
As a teacher in a Title I school, I often don't have the newest or best equipment and materials to engage my students. However, this spring, we were fortunate to be able to buy brand new books - and LOTS of them! Right now, those glossy, shiny, wonderful books are sitting in boxes, just waiting to find children who will love them. I need to create a cozy corner where those books can be displayed and invite my students to explore and expand their love for reading.
Creating an attractive and cozy display will help give my students access to the books while also providing a special experience for them to engage in their love of reading.
Using the two bookshelves, I will be able to create a corner book nook with space to show the books and visually delight my students and pique their reading interest. The book display will be used to highlight monthly themes and give access to the books that demonstrate those themes.
An attractive and inviting display of books will encourage even my most reluctant readers to explore literature.
