Do you remember the awe you experienced the first time you saw cells under a microscope? My students have not yet had that amazing opportunity.
In our darling neighborhood school, our 5th graders are eager, well behaved, and curious about the world around them.
They live in an upscale neighborhood that has been hit hard by the economy. Most of the homes in their area are in foreclosure, and the parents cannot contribute financially to the classroom. But because the neighborhood is so nice, our school also does not receive much government assistance, meaning it is hard for teachers to acquire classroom supplies.
My Project
For science instruction in our school, the four 5th grade classes rotate to each teacher for 2-3 months for a particular unit of study. With me, the students have the joy of learning about cell, plants, and human body systems. There are approximately 36 students per session and they work well together in groups. I am requesting only 12 microscopes (they can share), some prepared slides, and a cell model kit. I believe students best learn when they can touch, feel, and experience the curriculum. For cells, my students are currently limited to the textbook. Cells are an obscure concept and the students are going on pure faith that they exist, having never seen them with their own eyes. With the microscopes, they could make observations, drawing, models, and have a base knowledge of cells, which will assist them in their plants and human body lessons.
These highly intelligent students are our future doctors and scientists who are counting on me to open their eyes to the miniature world of cells.
Please help me feed their curiosity and inspire them with the wonders of science.
