This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"This book is too hard! This book is too easy!" Sounds like the story of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" right? But, it's not. These are the words I hear coming out of my class library. Unfortunately the words I long to hear, "This book is just right!" is not what is coming out my students mouths.
This year I was changed from 4th grade to 2nd grade and because of this most of my books are too difficult.
I teach at a Title 1 school, and English is a second language for a portion of my students, making reading, writing, and speaking difficult areas for them, as for some of my English only students. Add on the fact that I do not have enough books at their reading level and it makes teaching them these areas a daunting task. I would like for ALL of my students to have numerous opportunities to practice reading at their level with books that interest them.
My Project
Providing my students with fiction and non-fiction books at their level will give them the confidence they need to practice fluency and comprehension and expand their love for reading. Being able to actually decode words on a page AND understand them is a huge triumph for students. It makes them want to read more and more. Being able to independently read award-winning literature from a variety of authors also leads to developing good speaking and writing skills. The more a student is exposed to proper sentence structure the better the chances it will transfer over into their own speaking and writing. Right now, in the lower grades, is the time to catch students up because the learning gap is not that large. As they continue through their education it becomes harder for them to catch up, and unfortunately some students lose interest in school. Having a variety of books at their level is the 1st step to getting all of our students on track, so they never lose their love for learning.
This project will not only benefit this year’s students, but students for years to come.
It will give them confidence in their learning abilities, help them enjoy reading as a pastime, give them background knowledge in a variety of subject areas, and prepare them for the next grade level and ultimately the real world. As Dr. Seuss says, "The more that you read, the more you will know. And the more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
